What is superabrasive grinding in the diamond tool industry?
Super-hard abrasive grinding is the application of a medium (super-hard abrasive and related paste, or liquid carrier) between the surface of the part and the grinding disc.
When diamond particles are embedded in the grinding disc, the particles are equivalent to super-finishing grinding. At the same time, some particles of the diamond may be continuously separated from the grinding disc during the grinding process and become free particles rolling between them, thus the part being ground. There is no directional texture on the surface. The grinding process means that diamond particles cut into the working surface to remove fine materials. Imagine that the surface of the part is repeated millions of times of this kneading and friction process, which not only effectively removes the material, but also achieves polishing (when the diamond abrasive particle size is as small as 50nm, the polishing effect is more obvious).
In order to obtain the inherent strength advantages of diamond abrasives, the ideal grinding machines need to have high downward pressure or downward thrust (5psi or higher), and a powerful drive system that allows the use of larger pressure loads, variable speed, and It has the capability of high speed.
Compared with traditional grinding with aluminium oxide abrasive, diamond grinding has the following advantages:
High removal rate to achieve higher production efficiency;
Half a wavelength (11 millionths of an inch), perfect edge-to-edge flatness, in some cases it is up to 1/20 wavelength flatness;
The surface roughness is better than the sub-micron level (<0.5Ra), in some cases it can reach the sub-nano level;
One-step grinding and polishing can be realized, shortening processing time;
Reduce waste to support green environmental protection;
For grinding, the most importance is consistency. Many companies work hard to control the surface contact rate, load, and speed of the grinding disc, abrasive filling process, and slurry spraying. Diamond abrasive controls these variables to achieve more consistent roughness, removal rate, flatness or required profile, part size and thickness, and flattening requirements, and finally achieve customer satisfaction.
